A Praise to God for His work
through the life of
Many Pastors have served the Lord at First Baptist over the last 165 years. Notably, from 1973 through 1997, First Baptist was led by Rev. Robert Becker, who for 24 years faithfully taught the Word of God and led us into a closer walk with Jesus Christ. Pastor and Harriet are fondly remembered and appreciated by all who were touched by their ministry.
Robert C. Becker was the son of the late Clarence and Lillian (Butler) Becker, he was born in 1927 in Richmond Hill, NY. He graduated from Providence Bible Institute, RI, and attended Gordon College, MA, before graduating from Upsala College, NJ. Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Harriet Louise (Egland) Becker; and a brother, Rev. Sherwood Becker. He was ordained as a minister in 1951. He pastored Baptist churches in Sedgwick, Maine, Ticonderoga, NY, Williamsport, PA and Clayton NJ before serving as pastor of First Baptist Church of Bloomfield, NJ for 24 years. Rev. Becker served as President of the Conservative Baptist Association for several terms in the early 1980's, and served in leadership roles for a number of evangelical Christian organizations including Denver Seminary, World Venture, Africa Evangelical Fellowship, and Africa Inland Mission.
Pastor Becker guided us through a time of change in our church. Those years saw new residents come to Bloomfield from Asia, Africa, South America and the Caribbean. It was Pastor's sure hand on the tiller as these newcomers were welcomed into the church. Before long our Board of Deacons and other leadership groups had members from a wide variety of ethnic groups.
|In 1997, Robert &
Harriet Becker retired to their waterfront home in Maine, enjoying
frequent visits from their 4 children, 9 grandchildren and a growing
list of great-grandchildren. Pastor Becker didn't stay 'retired' very
long, as he signed up to serve as a mentor and counselor to younger
Pastors throughout New England through Vision New England. In June 2003
Harriet passed into the joyful presence of the One who gave Himself for
her. Even in her absence, Pastor served as a genial host to visiting
family & friends. Several years ago he moved to Pennsylvania to be
closer to family, living at Messiah Lifeways where
he continued his ministry by leading
devotions and teaching Sunday school for the residents.
In June 2018 Pastor Becker passed out of this life into one infinitely better, and as the words of one his favorite hymns said, "IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL".
