What We Believe - First Baptist Church of Bloomfield, NJ

Our Statement of Faith was revised and approved by our Church in February 2018:

THE HOLY BIBLE:  We believe the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the inspired Word of God, without error in concept or detail in the original writings, complete as the revelation of God's will for salvation, and the supreme and final authority in all matters to which they speak.
  (2 Samuel 7:28; Psalm 119:160; 2 Timothy 3:15-17; 1 Corinthians 14:37)

THE TRINITY:  We believe in one God, Creator and Sustainer of all things, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; we believe that they are equal in every divine perfection and execute distinct but harmonious offices in the work of creation, providence, and redemption.  (Genesis 1:1-2; Job 26:13; Psalm 104; Matthew 28:19; 1 Corinthians 12:4-6; Ephesians 2:18; John 10:30; 14;23; 17;5; Acts 5:3-4)

GOD THE FATHERWe believe in God the Father: an infinite, personal Spirit, perfect in holiness, wisdom, power, and love.  We believe that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of humanity.  We believe He works everything in accordance with His perfect will though His sovereignty does not eliminate nor minimize human responsibility.  God's foreknowledge is exhaustive and not dependent on human decisions and actions.  We believe He hears and answers prayer and that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through Jesus Christ.  (Matthew 28:19; John 15:26; Psalm 19:1; Exodus 3:14; Colossians 1:17)

JESUS CHRIST: We believe that Jesus Christ is God's eternal Son, who has precisely the same nature, attributes, and perfections as God the Father and God the Holy Spirit.  We believe further that He is not only true God, but true man, conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.  We also believe in His sinless life, His substitutionary atonement, His bodily resurrection from the dead, His ascension into heaven, His priestly intercession on behalf of His people, and His personal, physical, pre-millennial return from heaven with His saints to establish His millennial kingdom on earth.   (Matthew 28:19; John 15:26; 1 Corinthians 8:6; 2 Corinthians 13:14; Philippians 2:5-6; Hebrews 4:15; 1 Thessalonians 4:14-17)

HOLY SPIRIT: We believe in the person of the Holy Spirit, who was sent by God the Father to convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgment.  His ministry glorifies Jesus Christ and implements Christ's work of redemption.  He regenerates, baptizes, seals and indwells all believers at the moment of salvation, securing them in Christ forever and empowering them for godly living and service.  The ministry of the Spirit in the church does not need signs and wonders to verify it, nor does His work guarantee abundant wealth or life without illness, but is evidenced by the fruit of the Spirit in the building up of the body of Christ into Christ-likeness.  The Spirit empowers, leads and gifts believers, but no gift is a sign of His baptism or filling nor do they provide extra-biblical revelation but all are for the common good.   (Acts 5:3-4; 1 Corinthians 3:16-17; John 16:8-11; Ephesians 4:30; Exodus 31:3; 1 Samuel 16:13; John 14:26; Romans 8:26)

MANKIND: We believe God originally created persons, male and female, in the image of God and free from sin.  Sin entered the world when Adam, representing us, disobeyed God.  The effect is that all people are sinners by nature and choice, are spiritually dead, and in need of a Savior.  We also believe that those who repent of sin and trust Jesus Christ as Savior are regenerated by the Holy Spirit.  (Genesis 1:26-31; 2:7; 5:1-2; 9:6; Psalm 100:3; 119:73; Isaiah 45:12; Acts 17:26-28; Psalm 51:5; 139:13-16; Jeremiah 1:5; Matthew 1:18; Luke 1:31,34-36,41,44; Genesis 2:23-24; Matthew 19:4-6; 1 Timothy 3:2)

SALVATION:  We believe in salvation by grace through faith alone in the Lord Jesus Christ.  We further believe that this salvation is based upon the sovereign grace of God, was purchased by Jesus Christ on the cross, and is received by faith, apart from any human merit, works, or ritual.  We believe that all the redeemed, once saved, are kept by God's power and are thus secure in Christ forever.  We further believe salvation results in righteous living, good works, and proper social concern, culminating in glorification in His presence in heaven. (Acts 15:11; Romans 3:24,28; 1 Corinthians 3:5-7; Galatians 2:16; Ephesians 2:5,8; Romans 4:4-5; 6:23; 8:29-30; 11:5-6; Galatians 1:15; Ephesians 1:3-6; 2:8-9; Philippians 3:7-9; 1 Corinthians 1:30; 2 Corinthians 5:17; 7:10-11; Matthew 3:11; Mark 1:8)

THE CHURCH:  We believe the universal Church, launched on the day of Pentecost, composed of all persons who have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, is the spiritual body of Christ of which He is the head.  The local church is made up of all who have made a credible confession of faith and are baptized by immersion for the purpose of publicly declaring their relationship with Jesus Christ.  The local church practices the Lord's Supper for the purpose of remembering His death and burial, anticipating the return of Jesus Christ.  The church is built into Christ-likeness through teaching the Word, prayer, evangelism and worship in the context of an accountable community.  While the local church is autonomous and congregational, we commit to biblical interdependence with other churches of like faith.  Church leaders are responsible first to Jesus Christ and then to the congregation.  We recognize the calling and giftedness of men and women to serve together in ministry; however, we believe the office of pastor and deacon are intended to be filled by biblically qualified men.  It is imperative that every believer be an active part of a local church. We believe that each local church is self-governing in function and must be free from interference by any ecclesiastical or political authority.  Also, our church does not endorse any political party or personality, nor do we open the pulpit for the promoting of political agendas. We further believe that every human being is directly responsible to God in matters of faith and life and that each one should be free to worship God according to the dictates of his or her conscience.  (Acts 2; 1 Corinthians 12:27; 2 Corinthians 6:16; Colossians 1:18; Matthew 18:15-17; 28:19-20; Acts 2:38,41-42,47; 8:12,36-39; 16:34;18:8; 1 Corinthians 11:23-25; Ephesians 4:1-13)

HUMAN SOCIETY:  We believe that the human family is established by God and is the foundational institution of societyWe believe that marriage is the uniting of one man and one woman in covenant commitment for a lifetime. It is God's unique gift to reveal the union between Christ and His church and to provide for the man and the woman in marriage the framework for intimate companionship, the channel of sexual expression according to biblical standards, and the means for procreation of the human race. We believe that God created the human race male and female and that all conduct with the intent to adopt a gender other than one’s birth gender contradicts God’s divine purpose in creation.
We believe human life is a gift from God: sacred, unique, deserving of respect, care, and protection.  We believe God to be the Creator of every human life; a life which begins at conception; a life which possesses God's image; a life which has been given authority by God to rule over all the earth.

LAST THINGS:  We believe a person's eternal destiny is forever sealed by his or her acceptance or rejection of Christ and His work on the cross in this lifetime.  Unbelievers will experience eternal separation from the presence of God in hell, a place of suffering and loss.  Believers will experience eternity with God in heaven, a place of joyful worship and fellowship with the redeemed of all ages.  (Isaiah 26:19; John 5:25-29; Acts 24:14-15; 1 Corinthians 6:14; Philippians 3:21; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17; Revelation 20:5-6; 21:6-7)

These Articles of Faith do not exhaust the extent of our beliefs. The Bible itself, as the inspired and inerrant Word of God,
speaks with final authority concerning truth, morality and the proper conduct of mankind and, as such, is the sole and
final source of all that we believe. To the extent that these Articles of Faith do not speak to any particular issue,
application of Biblical precept shall control.  For purposes of this Church’s faith, doctrine, policy and discipline,
the Board of Deacons is this Church’s final interpretive authority on the Bible’s meaning and application.

Our church is in voluntary fellowship with 'MISSION MID-ATLANTIC',
an association of evangelical churches.

Our Church was founded in 1851 by residents of Essex County who desired to meet together for worship and the study of God's Word. First Baptist has had an involvement in the community life of the area, and a spiritual impact in the lives of it's people. Now, over 165 years later, that impact is as vital as ever.
